Keeping the Lights On: Building Cities That Survive the Storm

The Problem

Most power grids are centralized — think of it like one long string of holiday lights. If one bulb blows, sometimes the whole string goes dark.

Solutions

One major fix: put the power lines underground. The second fix: decentralize the grid into smaller microgrids that can run independently.

Trade-offs

Here's the catch: burying lines isn't a magic fix. It's expensive, still vulnerable to water, and repairs take longer when something does go wrong.
